CWA Statement on Public Financing of Elections and State of the State Address

We commend Governor Cuomo's call to give all New Yorkers an equally important voice in the political process. Like the Governor, we believe that public financing of New York elections will help level the playing field for all candidates and ensure our members' votes matter and their voices are heard. Enacting reform this year will be a enormous step towards removing the many blocks keeping average citizens from participating fully in our Democracy.

E-ZPass Workers Win First Contract!

After a 36 month battle, over 200 Staten Island-based E-ZPass workers have won a first contract! The agreement improves job security, health care, and guaranteed wage rates, while limiting sub-contracting. The contract is the result a fierce struggle by E-ZPass workers for their rights on the job at ACS, the Xerox division that runs the E-ZPass system for New York State agencies. Congratulations to the E-ZPass workers, who are proud members of CWA Local 1102!

Next Big Street Action: Thursday, Dec 1st March for Jobs and Economic Fairness

The protest at Foley Square on Nov 17 was huge, with over 35,000 protesters on the Square, nearby streets, and the Brooklyn Bridge. By focusing the public and the media on the growing inequality our country faces, these street marches and the Occupy movement are making a big difference for working people. On Thursday, December 1st, CWA will join the Central Labor Council's march for Jobs and Economic Fairness. CWA members are meeting at 4pm on 32nd Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The march will step off from Herald Square and head down to Union Square. Join the march!

Report: Verizon is a Tax Dodger

A new report from Citizens for Tax Justice shows that Verizon paid a negative 2.9% effective Federal tax rate during the 3 year 2008 - 2010 period. In other words, not only did Verizon pay less than any person who pays Federal income tax over those 3 years, but also the company got massive tax benefits to the tune of $951 million. Meanwhile, the company attacks middle class jobs. American taxpayers should not be subsidizing attacks on workers.

CWA STATEMENT ON EVICTION OF OCCUPY WALL STREET FROM ZUCCOTTI PARK

The Communications Workers of America released today the following statement from District 1 Vice-President Chris Shelton:

"The Communications Workers of America strongly condemns the decision by Mayor Bloomberg to forcibly remove protesters from Zuccotti park. In two short months, Occupy Wall Street has focused the world's attention on the deep frustration felt by working people about an economy that no longer works for the middle class..."
