Black History Month Spotlight: Afori Bobb, CWA Local 1101

For nearly three decades, Afori has been the perfect example of what it means to live with the values of solidarity, justice, and equity in the labor movement. Afori was hired at Verizon almost 30 years ago as a Service Representative, he understands firsthand the demands and pressures placed on call center workers. From excessive monitoring to constantly shifting performance standards, the challenges are real and sometime relentless. His compassion in these stressful times is what is often so appreciated.
His Union journey began in 1996 when he stepped up as a Steward. He later served as Chief Steward and now proudly serves as a Business Agent in the Commercial Division at Local 1101, primarily representing Service Representatives. In every role, his dedication has been clear: protect members’ rights, and lift people up in the process. He brings both strength and steadiness to difficult situations, ensuring our members feel heard, respected, and defended.
Afori’s leadership extends well beyond grievance handling. He serves as Co-Chair of the Equity Committee and Co-Chair of the African American Committee, helping to advance meaningful dialogue, representation, and action within the Union. He also serves on the Safety Committee, recognizing that workplace safety and physical well-being should always be prioritized.
His dedication reaches into the broader community as well. Each year, Local 1101 adopts a shelter to support families in need. Afori participates in these efforts from start to finish. He coordinates meals, gathers and distributes gifts, and even dons a Santa suit to bring joy to children during the event. His service reflects the core belief that union values extend beyond the workplace and into the community.
You will rarely attend a rally, mobilization, or community action without seeing Afori’s unmistakable smile in the crowd. His presence energizes events and reminds members that the Union is not just an organization, but a family built on being united though collective strength.
Afori is a 2023 graduate of the Dennis Serrette Minority Leadership Institute, a program designed to develop strong, diverse leadership within the union, following in the footsteps of fellow 1101 member Dennis Serrette who founded the CWA Black Caucus and helped create the CWA Minority Leadership Institute.
Afori embodies the spirit of Black History Month by continuing the legacy of those who fought for civil rights, economic justice, and workplace dignity. His leadership in equity work, his unwavering defense of members, and his commitment to service make him a powerful example of what it means to be a Union brother.
"Afori works tirelessly for the members of CWA Local 1101 he is always there for his brothers and sisters!"
