About District 1

CWA District 1 represents 145,000 workers in 200 CWA local unions in New York, New Jersey, New England, and eastern Canada. CWA members work in telecommunications, health care, higher education, manufacturing, broadcast and cable television, commercial printing and newspapers, state, local, and country government.

District 1 members have participated in successful large-scale strikes at Bell Atlantic, Southern New England Telephone, and Verizon, including the latest strike involving 40,000 Verizon and Verizon Wireless workers. The unity and determination of CWA members resulted in big gains to raise up working families, improve our communities and advance the interests of America’s working people

D1 has been a leader in supporting community-labor alliances like Jobs With Justice and New York's Working Families Party. In New Jersey, our state worker locals are waging a strong fight against attacks on the public sector by Republican Governor Chris Christie.

CWA D1 Vice President Dennis Trainor was elected by delegates to the union's 75th convention. Dennis went to work for the New York Telephone Company in 1969 as a splicer’s helper. He started his union career during the seven month strike against the New York Telephone Company in 1971 when he was elected a shop steward in CWA Local 1101. Dennis was re-elected as District 1 Vice President at the 2023 CWA National Convention.

Prior to being elected, Dennis was appointed Assistant to the Vice President of CWA District 1 on April 1, 2005. As Assistant to the Vice President, Dennis had the responsibility of Collective Bargaining throughout the District, which involved hundreds of collective bargaining agreements covering all members in District 1.
