Black History Month Spotlight: Elizabeth Black, CWA Local 1084

Born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Elizabeth Black is a proud product of the Camden City School District. Her commitment to community and service continued as she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University–Camden Campus. Rooted deeply in the city that shaped her, Elizabeth has dedicated her professional life to uplifting and serving others.

With over 20 years of experience in the social services field, Elizabeth brought her passion and expertise to the agency in February 2018. Since then, she has become a powerful advocate not only for the clients she serves, but also for her fellow union members.

Since joining the agency in 2018, she has consistently stepped up to lead, advocate, and serve. She is an active member of the Local 1084 Legislative Committee, helping ensure our members' voices are represented beyond the workplace and into the policies that impact our members and communities.

She played a crucial role as Mobilization Chairperson during the 2024–2028 contract campaign with the Camden County Board of Social Services. Through her leadership, members were informed, organized, and empowered to stand united throughout the bargaining process. She also served on the Bargaining and Negotiating Team, directly contributing to contract discussions and fighting for protections, fairness, and improved working conditions.

In addition, she serves on Local 1084's Paracontract Committee and as a dedicated Shop Steward. In every role, she advocates fiercely for members — fighting for them as if their issue were her own. She listens, educates, defends, and stands firm to ensure members are treated with dignity and respect. Her commitment reflects the resilience, strength, and leadership that Black History Month represents. She strengthens our union, uplifts our members, and inspires others to step into leadership.

Her work reminds us that Black history is not just something we honor in February — it is being written every day through leaders like her.

"As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor not only the history that shaped us, but the leaders who are actively shaping our future. I am proud to nominate this remarkable member for our Weekly Member Spotlight. Her commitment reflects the resilience, strength, and leadership that Black History Month represents. She strengthens our union, uplifts our members, and inspires others to step into leadership."
