Friday, October 21st: CWA and Occupy Wall Street March Against Verizon Corporate Greed

Verizon workers are part of the 99%! Together with Occupy Wall Street, we will march from 140 West Street past Zuccotti Park to shine a spotlight on corporate greed at Verizon and Verizon Wireless. The march will start at 5:15pm at 140 West Street, where informational picketing will start at 4:00pm. The march will finish near a Verizon Wireless store. Join us!

After reviewing the company?s counterproposal, it became clear to your bargaining committee that the company?s commitment to the union to end the strike and to start bargaining with a commitment to work from our health plans and not theirs and to actually start bargaining our issues as well as their issues was never going to happen.

The Company presented a comprehensive counter proposal and your committee questioned the company to try to understand the intent of their proposal. We recessed late last night and will reconvene bargaining this morning to continue questioning the company on their proposal.

Today, Verizon decided to put out a Company update which states they completed their initial review of our proposal and they state ?In costing out the various elements of the unions' proposals, the company determined that they significantly exacerbate the problem of Wireline's high cost structure by adding more than $1 billion in annual operating costs.? What the company did not tell you in their update is that the Company?s proposal would save the company $1.3 billion by stripping away and diminishing every benefit we have negotiated over the last 50 years.

CWA DISTRICT ONE STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF OCCUPY WALL STREET DEMONSTRATIONS

Yesterday, the National Executive Board of the Communications Workers of America voted unanimously to endorse the Occupy Wall Street protests that began three weeks ago in New York and have now spread to cities across the country. Tomorrow, our members will join with thousands of New Yorkers who are taking to the streets for the labor and community day of solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement. The young people who have Occupied Zuccotti Park have captured the spirit of our times. We are proud to stand with them, and join them in the streets.
