Uniting in Camden for a Fair Contract

CWA locals in Camden, NJ are building solidarity and working together to fight for fair contracts.  The majority of CWA bargaining units do not currently have contracts.

On April 17th, CWAers from Locals 1084, 1079, and 1014 marched through Camden demanding fair contracts for workers. Local 1079, which represents180 custodial and maintenance staff at the Camden City School District, has been fighting for a contract for 3 years and 10 months. The mostly low-wage African American and Latino workers keep fighting back.

Staff Rep. Jim McAsey explains, “The situation became more complicated when Governor Christie seized control of Camden City Public Schools from the community in 2013. Since then, the workers have been fighting back by flooding the Superintendent's phone lines, rallying with community allies in the District's administration building, and demonstrating at school board meetings.  Almost all the issues in negotiations had been settled at a 14-hour marathon bargaining session on April 10, 2015 but when management refused to budge on our one demand, job security, bargaining broke down and we walked away.”

Jackie, a custodian, proud Local 1079 member, and a Camden schools graduate herself, recently celebrated her daughter's graduation from the district. She needs this contract to be settled so she has money to buy her daughter books for college.

Workers in Camden deserve fair contracts and we’ll keep fighting until they get it.
