CWA 1103 Gannett strike

Members of the NewsGuild-CWA at Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain, walked off the job on June 5th - the day of Gannett’s annual shareholder meeting - in the largest collective action that Gannett employees have ever taken to date.

CWA Local 1103 members joined Gannett workers on the picket lines as part of the one-day strike by hundreds of journalists in two dozen newsrooms across seven states. The workers are demanding that Gannett reinvest in local news and urged shareholders to take a vote of no-confidence against Mike Reed, Gannett’s chief executive.

Insider strike

Insider union members, represented by the NewsGuild of New York (TNG-CWA Local 31003) began an open-ended Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike that started at midnight on June 2nd after stalled contract negotiations and a failure by management to address its ULP. After forming a union in 2021, the workers have been fighting for a first contract that would include fair wages and reduced healthcare costs. In November of 2022, the company illegally changed the workers’ health insurance unilaterally, forcing them to spend more on healthcare while significantly reducing their coverage. In response, the union filed a ULP and in May, 2023 the National Labor Relations Board found merit in the charges, but management has thus far refused to rectify these unlawful actions, and so the workers walked off the job on June 2nd.

CWA District 1 rallied alongside the striking Insider workers on June 2nd.

“This may be the most important thing I’ve ever done,” said Libby, speaking to the crowd of strikers and supporters.
