From the Office of the Vice President of CWA District 1: Fighting to Fix Our Broken Tax System

April 15th — Tax Day — is a reminder of both our shared responsibility to our communities, and also the imbalance that still exists in this system that lets corporations and the ultra-rich avoid paying their fair share.
While our members and other working families pay what they owe in order to fund our communities — the schools we send our children to, the roads we drive on, the emergency services that protect us, the hospitals and clinics that keep us healthy, and so much more — our broken tax system still allows people and companies raking in millions of dollars (or more) per year to take advantage of loopholes and tax breaks, keeping a far bigger percentage of their income than the rest of us who actually make this economy run.
It’s not right, and we’re fighting to fix this broken system across each of our states as well as federally so that working people aren’t bearing the brunt of funding our communities and basic needs.
As a union, we’re working alongside partners across the labor movement and other community groups to push for a fairer tax system that asks more from those at the top and delivers real relief for working people — like free childcare, lower healthcare costs, more public transportation options, and more .
Our fight is about fairness as much as it is practicality. When those making over $5 million per year pay what they owe, we can build stronger schools, better infrastructure, and a more secure future for everyone.
Upcoming Event: Join us on April 30th at 7pm for an info session and discussion about how our tax system works, where our taxes actually go, and how we’re fighting for a fairer tax system that helps working people. Click here to register!
