Member Briefings on the Impact of the So-Called "Big Beautiful Bill" on Workers

In the wake of Congress passing their Federal budget package (AKA the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, or OBBBA), CWA has teamed up with the Fiscal Policy Institute and several other major unions and community organizations to hold virtual briefings for members on the major impacts of the bill on on working people across the country.

Over the last several weeks briefings have been held over Zoom in several regions of New York State, with info specific to workers in those regions to review what’s in the bill; how it could affect our healthcare, jobs, contracts, and communities; and what steps we can take moving forward, including:

  • How these cuts to healthcare, food support, and other basic needs will impact our communities
  • The timeline for implementation
  • A snapshot of what to expect in each region
  • How we'll be impacted by the changes to overtime
  • Actions we can take together to hold Congress accountable to their constituents

In the coming days, we'll be hosting more briefings in New Jersey and other regions throughout District 1.

On August 22 members of CWA Locals 1103 and 1118 took part in the Progress for the People Town Hall, an in-person briefing in Glens Falls, NY, on the impact of the bill, alongside Reps. Paul Tonko, Ayanna Pressley, and Becca Balint.

“My member of Congress [Rep. Mike Lawler] voted for the One Big Ugly Cruel Bill," said Local 1103 Secretary Treasurer Joe Mayhew, speaking at the event. "And that is a problem for the members of CWA, especially the ones in the healthcare profession. Because the One Big Ugly Cruel Bill cuts hundreds of billions of dollars out of Medicaid. And that will affect all of our local hospitals.”
