CWA healthcare workers are calling on legislators to guarantee hospitals and nursing homes have the staffing they need for quality care. Dozens of CWAers from Locals 1133 and 1168, joined by members and staff from the New York State Nurses Association, spent the day speaking with elected officials.

The group secured signed commitment cards from local and state electeds, making significant progress towards passing local resolutions.

The fact is that safe staffing saves lives and when there are not enough nurses, we all suffer. The research shows that when nurses care for two to three times the patients they can safely manage, the chances of preventable death, hospital acquired infections, and adverse outcomes increase.

Safe staffing is a win-win for both patients and nurses. All patients deserve the type of individual attention and care that nurses are trained to give - as long as there are enough of them to do the job. CWA healthcare workers will keep up their work for safe staffing legislation while they fight for fair contracts at Catholic Health Services and Kaleida Health.
