SEN. SCHUMER URGES VERIZON TO RE-HIRE BIANCA CUNNINGHAM
At a rally in Brooklyn, NY U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joined CWA members to demand Verizon Wireless re-hire illegally fired Verizon Wireless worker and CWA Local 1109 member Bianca Cunningham and settle fair contracts at Verizon and Verizon Wireless.
Verizon just announced $5.5 billion in profits in the fourth quarter of 2015, but management would rather intimidate its workers than settle a fair contract.
WORKERS AT LA CASA DE DON PEDRO IN NEWARK, NJ VOTE ‘CWA YES’
On January 20, the workers at La Casa de Don Pedro in Newark, NJ voted overwhelmingly to join CWA Local 1037.
The newly-organized group includes teachers, assistant teachers, administrative assistants, receptionists, drivers, family workers, janitors, cooks, substitutes, and wraparound staff.
CWA TESTIFIES AGAINST ALTICE-CABLEVISION DEAL AT NYC HEARINGS
Customers, advocates and workers testified against the Altice-Cablevision deal at New York State Public Service Commission hearings this week. In the Hudson Valley and the Bronx, they voiced their concerns about how European cable company Altice's move to buy Cablevision would negatively affect jobs and customer service.
NYC TRAFFIC AGENTS REACH LANDMARK 7-YEAR TENTATIVE AGREEMENT
New York City traffic enforcement agents, members of CWA Local 1182, reached a historic tentative seven-year agreement with the city that includes raises and a signing bonus. The 2,100 agents issue parking tickets and direct traffic throughout the city.
NEWSGUILD, ELECTED OFFICIALS RALLY TO SAVE EL DIARIO
"It would be shameful for a city like NYC not to have a Spanish daily we can hold & read." - New York City Council Member Rosie Mendez.
The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, rallied on the steps of New York City Hall to protest the latest round of layoffs that have gutted El Diario/La Prensa, the mainland's oldest Spanish-language newspaper.
Journalists and union members spoke out alongside city council members, who had held an oversight hearing on the importance of supporting local ethnic media immediately after the press conference.
ELECTED OFFICIALS, RESIDENTS DEMAND VERIZON STOP DENYING CO-OP CITY HIGH-SPEED INTERNET
State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, State Assemblyperson Mike Benedetto, Councilman Andy King, union members and Co-op City residents came together to demand Verizon stop stalling and offer its high-speed FiOS internet, phone and television in Co-op City. The demand comes days after a poll showed that almost three quarters of Co-op City residents want the option of Verizon FiOS service.
AFA-CWA FLIGHT ATTENDANTS HOLD WORLDWIDE DAY OF ACTION
At Newark Airport, Flight Attendants tell United, "It's Our Turn."
AFA-CWA Flight Attendants from United, Continental and Continental Micronesia and supporters held a worldwide Day of Action on January 21.
This was the biggest demonstration yet of AFA-CWA's determination to get a joint contract for the 25,000 Flight Attendants at the combined United Airlines.
NEW JERSEY KICKS-OFF BERNIE SANDERS CAMPAIGN
On January 26, CWA members were among the crowd of over 400 people that attended the official Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign kick-off in New Jersey. The standing-room only crowd filled the Sayreville Democratic Headquarters to hear how they could do their part in the organizing efforts across the state.
100 COMMUNITY LEADERS, CWAERS CALL FOR JUSTICE AT CATHOLIC HEALTH
CWA members in Detroit, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri distribute copies of report calling out Catholic Health on its bad behavior.
The pressure for justice at Catholic Health in Western New York is growing both locally and across the nation. On January 1, 100 community leaders in the Greater Buffalo area published an ad in the Buffalo News calling attention to a recent report by the Workers’ Rights Board of Buffalo’s Coalition for Economic Justice which exposes multiple areas where Catholic Health has strayed from its mission and stated values.
