CWA Statement on Donald Trump’s Weaponization of the Department of Justice Levied Against NY State Attorney General Tish James

NEW YORK – Dennis G. Trainor, Vice President of Communications Workers of America District 1, issued the following statement regarding the indictment of NYS Attorney General Tish James by the U.S. Attorney’s office of the Eastern District of Virginia:

We stand, unequivocally and with all the strength and clarity of our 300,000+ strong membership, with Tish James.

Throughout her entire career, TishJames has fought on the side of working families. No matter the personal risk, no matter the opposition she's up against, she has never once wavered in her commitment to New York's working people. No one has been a stronger advocate for the rights of our members, from fighting directly alongside us in our contract battles with Verizon and Cablevision to advocating for equal pay for our City of New York workers to fighting legal battles against scab workers on our members’ behalf. Tish James consistently stands up for what is right, just and follows the rule of law.

We respect the rule of law. We respect free and fair elections, and we respect that Donald Trump was democratically elected in 2016 and again last November. But the office of the Presidency is a sacred one with a responsibility first and foremost to the American people. It does not grant the occupier full rights to wield the power of the federal government as a weapon against their political enemies.

But in a critically uncertain time for our country, President Trump is devoting attention and government funds to these baseless accusations while leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers to languish in unpaid furlough and on the brink of layoffs as the government shutdown drags on.

So egregious is this attempt to weaponize the federal government that President Trump has been forced to go through several prosecutors to find someone who would do his bidding in this case — his own U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was pushed out after concluding these charges did not have sufficient evidence to be brought forth.

This is a blatant attempt at silencing opposition — in particular, opposition who seeks to keep the balance of powers in check and give voice to America’s working families — and we stand together against anyone who would attempt to use their position of authority to silence the people.

We stand with our New York Attorney General.
