CWA District 1 Celebrates a Major Victory for Working People with the Election of Zohran Mamdani as the next Mayor of New York City
New York, NY – The Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 1 proudly congratulates Zohran Mamdani on his historic win as Mayor of New York City, a momentous achievement rooted in the grassroots power of working people.
Dennis G. Trainor, Vice President of CWA District 1 representing over 25,000 members who work in the five boroughs, including 10,000 workers for the City of New York, released the following statement:
This campaign had a simple message that resonated across the five boroughs: New York City must be affordable for those who make it run. Last night’s victory is proof that when candidates center working people, we can challenge the status quo and win real power. Mayor-elect Mamdani has shown his commitment to working people time and again—he’s walked CWA’s picket lines, supported our legislation, and consistently put the needs of real New Yorkers before corporate CEOs or big-money donors. Zohran’s focus on affordability spoke to millions of New Yorkers being priced out of the city they love, and his campaign was fueled by the same solidarity and organizing that define our union.
We’re very proud to have worked closely with the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, as part of a months-long campaign that included door-knocking, phone-banking, leafleting, and other efforts to mobilize union voters and ensure labor’s voice was heard loud and clear.
Looking ahead, our Union stands ready to partner with this new Administration—from the thousands of City workers staffing its agencies to the thousands more preparing for contract negotiations at major employers like Verizon. Whatever the bargaining table, we know Mayor-elect Mamdani will have our backs, just like we’ve had his. Together, we will deliver policies that raise the standards for all workers and invest in the public services, programs and infrastructure that our City deserves.
This victory is a testament to the power of the labor movement and to everyone who believes that we CAN and MUST build an affordable city that lifts everyone up.
When working people stand and fight together, we win!
