Women's History Month Spotlight: Shannon Gomes, CWA Local 1091
Shannon Gomes has been the President of the New Jersey Nurses Union (NJNU), CWA Local 1091, since 2021. She was re-elected in 2024, reflecting the trust and confidence her colleagues have in her leadership. Her tenure as president is marked by a deep commitment to her fellow nurses and a powerful vision for worker advocacy.
A dedicated nurse at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center since 2014, where she currently works as a per diem telemetry nurse, Shannon’s union journey began upon joining the hospital. She quickly became a trusted voice among her peers, first serving as a delegate and later as Co-Chair of the Union. Her leadership is rooted in lived experience—growing up in a union household, Shannon witnessed firsthand the power of collective action and the security and dignity a union can bring to working families. That upbringing instilled in her the strong union values that continue to guide her today. Her leadership is marked by integrity, passion, and a genuine commitment to building solidarity and improving conditions for all members.
