WE'RE ALL IN FOR A UNION!

We’re unionizing to improve our working conditions and to be able to better study and contribute to our important fields of research.

Together, with a seat at the bargaining table, we can push to improve things like:

  • Annual salary increases
  • Transparency of communications with the RF about payroll status and updates
  • Expanding existing benefits in our contract, such as better insurance premiums and lower out-of-pocket medical costs
  • Professional development resources and funding
  • Making sure our labs meet safe standards
  • Parking access and affordability
  • Disciplinary protections
  • Job security
  • Housing support, protections, and accommodations
  • A voice in employment-related immigration and visa issues
  • Greater input on policies that affect Postdocs

As a union, we aim to ensure that the needs of our diverse population are addressed as our conditions evolve. For instance, many of us are international workers who require additional protections, or have dependents who rely on our support. All of this occurs against the background of an ongoing affordability crisis. Despite this, many of us are paid below the minimum wage set by the NIH. A union will help ensure us security, compensation, and a more stable work-life balance that lets us pursue our research effectively and provide quality mentorship to the Stony Brook University student body.

Join us! Vote for our union:

I believe in a unified workforce and basic benefits for all postodcs.

Isabel Hubbard
Isabel Hubbard, Neurobiology

I want a union to win better pay on par with peer instiutions and administrative accountability.

Swetha Murthygowda
Swetha Murthygowda, Anesthesiology

As a union, we can fight for better benefits, protections, and wages. And together, we can win things for international post docs like help with position protection while we travel, and temporary housing benefits.

Matthew Babbitt
Matthew Babbitt, AI Institute

In a housing market dominated by ballooning rent, broker fees, and predatory landlords, we as professional researchers deserve dignified housing accommodations. SBU hosted postdocs in on-campus units before the pandemic. Why not now? As a  union will fight to win housing support and protections.

Yagmur Kan
Yagmur Kan, Pharmacological Sciences

Our research powers the university. A union would empower us to negotiate for with the pay, healthcare, and job security we deserve.

Anwesha Sil
Anwesha Sil, Radiology

As an international worker, we need job security. With a union, we won't have to fear being arbitrarily fired and risking our status in the country.

Jonathan Plessis-Belair
Jonathan Plessis-Belair, Neurobiology

Postdocs can't drive research without community, and a Union would bring us together and give us leverage to support each other.

Babak Hemmatian

Our passion for what we do does not devalue our labor, and the best way to ensure its value is recognized is by getting organized.

Leroy Nunez
Leroy Nunez, Biochemistry

I want a union so we have the leverage to protect our international colleagues.

Rachel White
Rachel White, Microbiology And Immunology

I'm tired of being nickle and dimed to death.

Ethan Raffman
Ethan Raffman, Chemistry

I didn't get a chance to negotiate my salary or increases. With a union, RF would have to negotiate cost of living increases and more.

Tim Schoch
Tim Schoch, Center for Inclusive Education

Having a union means being in community with other postdocs.

Xiaolong Liang
Xiaolong Liang, Radiation Oncology

I was in a grad worker union and won pay increases and more affordable health insurance. I want that as a postdoc too! More People = More Power!

Monoj Das
Monoj Das, Nephrology

I believe having a union at Stony Brook University can help us work together, share our concerns, and support one another. We have an opportunity to work collectively toward fair compensation, better benefits, and a positive, supportive work environment for everyone.
