Thursday, April 16: NYC Council Members Demand LanguageLine Solutions Respect Interpreters Right to Organize

LanguageLine Solutions (LLS) interpreters serve New York City hospitals, courtrooms, banks, and schools, ensuring fair language access to all New Yorkers.

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) — As interpreters continue to fight for a union at LanguageLine Solutions (LLS), Chair of the Committee on Workforce Development Council Member Julie Won alongside Comptroller Mark Levine, other New York City Council Members and unions will hold a press conference to call on LLS parent company, Teleperformance, to respect their worker’s right to form a union and improve working conditions.

LanguageLine Solutions serves more than 30,000 clients worldwide, including agencies within the New York City government.  Approximately 1.79 million New Yorkers have limited English proficiency (LEP). LLS interpreters ensure language access in situations that impact New Yorkers health, legal rights, insurance, and finances. Despite their essential work, interpreters face stressful working conditions, inadequate training, and low pay, leading to high turnover and putting at risk the quality of service they are able to provide to immigrant communities that they serve

WHAT: A press conference to call on Teleperformance to respect interpreters' right to organize a union. Interpreters will make an announcement related to their workplace health and safety needs, with support from elected officials.

WHO: Council Member Julie Won; Council Member Lincoln Restler; New York City Comptroller Mark Levine; Billy Gallagher, Assistant to the Vice President, CWA District 1; LanguageLine Interpreters; Former Comptroller Brad Lander; CWA Local 1104 Nurses; UAW Local 2325

WHEN: April 16,  9 AM ET

WHERE: Front steps of New York City Hall.

As a subsidiary of French multinational Teleperformance, LLS is party to the Teleperformance-UNI Global Agreement on Social Responsibility, which affords workers the right to organize a union free of management interference and intimidation. While LLS has implemented this agreement in other countries, the company is refusing to fully implement the agreement in the United States.

CWA surveyed LLS interpreters on their working conditions for the report, LanguageLine Interpreters Speak Out.
