CWA Praises the Legacy of Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman Upon Her Retirement Announcement

TRENTON, NJ. – November 10, 2025 — The Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 1 today extends its deepest gratitude to Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman on the announcement of her retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives. For decades, Rep. Watson Coleman has been a steadfast champion for working families in New Jersey and across the United States.

As the first African American woman to represent New Jersey in Congress, she has not only broken barriers but has tirelessly used her voice and vote to lift up the voices of working people. Her career has been a testament to her unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and the dignity of labor.

"Rep. Watson Coleman has been more than a reliable vote; she has been a true ally and a fearless fighter in the halls of power," said CWA D1 Vice President Dennis Trainor. "She understood that a strong democracy requires an empowered workforce, and she never shied away from standing with us against powerful corporate interests. Her tenacity in defending workers' rights to organize, fighting for fair wages, and protecting collective bargaining has made a tangible difference in the lives of countless CWA members and their families."

From her time in the New Jersey General Assembly to her distinguished service in Congress, Rep. Watson Coleman consistently prioritized the needs of working people over political expediency. Her legacy as a progressive champion is secure, and her absence in Congress will be deeply felt.

“CWA wishes Rep. Watson Coleman all the best in her well-deserved retirement,” said Anna-Marta Visky, CWA District 1's New Jersey Political and Field Director. “We thank her for her extraordinary service and pledge to honor her legacy by continuing the fight for economic and social justice for all workers.”
