Union Backs Proven Champions for New York’s Working Families
NEW YORK – The Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 1 today announced its endorsement in three top statewide races, backing a slate of candidates who have shown their commitment to fighting for working families:
- Kathy Hochul for New York Governor
- Adrienne Adams for New York Lieutenant Governor
- Letitia James for New York State Attorney General
These endorsements reflect each candidates' longstanding commitment to working families throughout their careers, as well as their strong track records of doing the needed work to build a New York that works for everyone — not just those at the top.
“CWA members are the ones doing the work to keep New York connected — and that's exactly why I've fought to invest more than $1 billion through ConnectALL to make sure every New Yorker has access to affordable, high-speed internet,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “Their endorsement means the world to me, and together we'll keep building a New York where good union jobs are connecting our state from Buffalo to Babylon.”
“Governor Hochul shares our vision for the future of New York and is committed to working with CWA to achieve it,” said Dennis G. Trainor, CWA District 1 Vice President. “Under her leadership, we’ve been able to pass a record number of bills over the past several years that have improved the lives of New York’s working families and delivered meaningful progress for CWA members.”
“Adrienne Adams and Letitia James have been strong allies to union members throughout their careers, particularly to CWA,” Trainor continued. “They’ve walked our picket lines and stood toe-to-toe with some of the toughest bosses in our contract fights.”
Governor Kathy Hochul has worked closely with CWA and other unions to secure investments in broadband buildout, protect against the use of One Touch Make Ready, increase healthcare funding for financially distressed hospitals, pass necessary Tier 6 reform for our public sector members, and more — most recently, the Governor was instrumental in securing an end once and for all to the burdensome fees that State University of New York graduate workers (members of CWA Local 1104) had previously been forced to pay back to their universities, which represents a life-changing shift on working conditions for over 5,000 educators.
Speaker Adrienne Adams has been a staunch advocate for working families throughout her public service career, fighting for economic justice policies, building better workforce development structures in New York City, and expanding affordable housing so that more New Yorkers can stay in their homes.
Attorney General Letitia James has been a fierce champion for all New Yorkers throughout her career, and has never backed down from a fight for justice. She’s worked with CWA and other unions to hold employers accountable for wage theft and labor violations, walked our picket lines and called needed attention to some of the toughest contract fights, and vigorously defended New York's labor laws. Just recently, she joined The NewsGuild-CWA to successfully urge media company Condé Nast to reinstate several unjustly fired workers, showing once again her commitment to defending workers’ rights.
“This election holds a great deal of promise and opportunity for working people to fight for the country and communities we want to see,” Vice President Trainor said. “And elect legislative leaders who will not just listen to the needs of their constituents, but work alongside us to build a stronger New York, and a stronger country for all working families.”
