NYC Street Co-Named After Local 1180 Steward Priscilla Carrow
Priscilla Carrow devoted her life to her community in Queens, NY - in addition to her 25 years of service at Elmhurst Hospital, she was the president of the Sherwood Village Tenant Association, a member of Queens Community Board 4, chairperson of the National Council of Negro Women/Empress Life Members Guild, secretary for the Better Community League, and a dedicated shop steward for CWA Local 1180.
On March 30, 2020, after spending weeks handing out masks and other protective equipment and supplies to hospital workers, Priscilla passed away from COVID-19.
“I am beyond devastated and heartbroken as is the entire Local 1180 Executive Board,” said Local 1180 President Gloria Middleton last year. “Priscilla always had a huge smile on her face and kind words to offer.”
Last week, Priscilla was honored by her Queens community, coworkers, and fellow 1180 members with the dedication of a street name in her honor. The intersection of 98th Place and 57th Avenue was co-named Priscilla Carrow Way on Friday, with Carrow’s friends, family and colleagues, plus elected officials, in attendance.
“Priscilla Carrow Way will be a symbol in our neighborhood memorializing a woman that impacted lives in more ways than one. At her core and at her best, Priscilla was an advocate, a champion, and a crusader, fighting for housing, fair wages and so much more for so many,” said Council Member Francisco Moya, who sponsored the street-naming.
