Healthcare Workers Gather to Plan Next Steps in the Fight for Safe Staffing

In 2021, CWA passed a law to improve staffing in our hospitals that took effect in January…but what now? When will we start to see changes in our hospitals, and what’s next in both our fight for safe staffing and other laws that will impact healthcare workers?

These are some of the questions that over 80 CWA healthcare members and leadership gathered to discuss on April 19th at the CWA Healthcare Assembly held over Zoom.

Members of CWA locals throughout New York were joined by special guests CWA National Secretary-Treasurer Sara Steffens, New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera, and New York State Assemblymember Amy Paulin for an in depth look at the state’s Clinical Staffing Committees law and our continued fight for safe staffing.

Topics discussed included

  • The implementation of our Clinical Staffing Committee Law, our progress in staffing committees and the violation complaint process
  • How we’re working to hold hospitals accountable and improving our staffing conditions
  • Updates from the Department of Health about this staffing law and other laws that will affect our jobs
