Exciting Victories for CWA-Backed Candidates in the NYS Primaries!

In New York, Primary Elections in several districts can be the biggest elections of the year, determining who will ultimately end up in seats that have low competition in the General Election. That's why CWAers went all out over the last several weeks to advocate for pro-worker candidates in several seats throughout the state ahead of last Tuesday's Primary Election Day.

In one of the most exciting victories of the night, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan won a special election in New York’s 19th Congressional District with strong support from CWA Local 1120. Throughout the campaign, Ryan consistently championed the rights of all working families and reiterated his commitment to defending them in Congress.

In addition, 21 out of the 22 candidates endorsed by CWA District 1 in New York won their primaries last week, including:

  • Congressional District 4: Laura Gillen decisively won her primary in a crowded field with support from Local 1104.

  • Congressional District 17: Sean Patrick Maloney won with support from Locals 1103, 1107 and 1120.

  • Congressional District 19: Josh Riley won his primary with help from Local 1120.

  • State Senators Gustavo Rivera, Jabari Brisport, and Robert Jackson all fended off well-financed, high-profile primary challenges, and State Senators Andrew Gounardes, Anna Kaplan, Joe Addabbo, Kevin Parker, Brad Hoylman, and Sean Ryan also held onto their seats.
