CWA Members to Rep. Zeldin: When Our Jobs, Food, and Environment are Under Attack, We Fight Back!

On April 1, hundreds of protesters from CWA, Food & Water Watch, Long Island Labor Federation, MoveOn.org, Working Families Party, and other organizations swarmed Congressman Lee Zeldin’s office  demanding he stop supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a deal which would lead to lost jobs,  unsafe food, more pollution, and higher Rx drug prices.

Michael Gendron, Executive Vice President, CWA Local 1108, addresses the crowd.

"Lee Zeldin wants to fast track sending more jobs overseas. He should stand up for his constituents, not big corporations and wall street banks that want to eliminate labor, consumer and environmental standards while outsourcing more good jobs," said Chris Shelton, Vice President, CWA District One.

Zeldin recently wrote to President Obama to announce his support for Fast Track legislation. Meanwhile, virtually all of the Democrats in the NYS delegation have announced their opposition to Fast Track, and two New York Republican Representatives, Chris Gibson and Chris Collins, also oppose the legislation.Other Republican representatives are undecided.

“We directed the rally towards Congressman Zeldin because he claimed he wouldn’t take a position on the TPP until he sees the bill, but clearly he already took a position when he signed the letter to President Obama. This is just another example of political cowardice. He won’t even explain what he thinks actually constitutes a “good” trade deal vs. a “bad” trade deal,” said Michael Gendron, Executive Vice President, CWA Local 1108

Protesters called Zeldin’s office, leaving him a voicemail chanting, “What do we do when our jobs are under attack? Stand up fight back! What do we do when our food is under attack? Stand up, fight back! What do we do when our healthcare is under attack? “Stand up, fight back! ...”

We’ve had enough of bad trade deals that hurt US workers. It’s time to take action.
