Big Legislative Win - NY Governor Signs Bill to Protect Jobs into Law!

Governor Hochul signed into law our bill to protect our jobs and stop dangerous One Touch Make Ready regulations!

One Touch Make Ready (OTMR) is a harmful, anti-union regulation that destroys good jobs by allowing unskilled contractors to do the work that should be done by career employees - our members are the ones who know the condition of the equipment and poles, our members have been professionally trained, and our members are the ones who should be doing this work.

This legislation - Bill S.8919 (Hinchey) / A.10216A (Paulin) - protects the collective bargaining agreements between employers and their workforce and prevents One Touch Make Ready from happening in New York State. It’s a major victory not only for us, but for all union pole workers in New York.

CWA members sent over 2,200 emails to the New York State Assembly and Senate to urge them to pass this legislation blocking OTMR, and dozens spoke directly with lawmakers about the issue - this victory would not have been possible without all of your hard work! We heard again and again from legislators that they were feeling the pressure from our members about the importance of this legislation, and earlier this year the State Senate voted 60-1 in favor of passing it while the Assembly passed it unanimously. Now that the Governor has signed the bill, it is the law of the land.

It’s another great example that whether it’s a contract fight, a picket line, or a fight for pro-worker legislation, we have so much power when we stand together and fight for workers!
