Bargaining Updates - Two Big Wins, Including a First Contract!

NJ CAR - Local 1032

On June 15 the 64-person unit at NJ CAR voted to ratify their first union contract! The workers joined Local 1032 in October of 2022 and got right to work at the bargaining table to advocate for a contract that would include some significant gains. The new agreement includes:

  • Increase to the minimum salary of all unit members to $20
  • Subsequent increases of 8% over the life of the contract
  • A solidified bonus structure for all qualified departments
  • Expanded language for paid time off and bereavement leave

La Casa De Don Pedro - Local 1037

Workers at two of La Casa De Don Pedro’s Early Childhood and Youth & Family Services divisions, members of CWA Local 1037, overwhelmingly voted to ratify two new collective bargaining agreements in June, capping off a year of tough contract negotiations.

The two contracts cover childcare workers at two divisions: Early Childhood Education Division and Youth & Family Services Division. The workers, who are primarily women and people of color, have been vastly underpaid and mistreated in the workplace, and launched multiple campaigns to bring awareness to these, making this contract victory significant.

Throughout bargaining, the workers held rallies, pickets, and other mobilization actions to demand fair pay for the important services they provide - and the fight paid off! The new contracts include a new pay scale with increases each year of the contract, promotional rules for workers to have an opportunity to fill open positions, improved health and safety language, a minimum of fifteen holidays per year, and rollover paid leave. Read more here.
