Big First Contract Win for Local 1120 Wappingers Central School District Nurses

Nearly one year to the day after the Wappingers Central School District (WCSD) nurses decided to unionize with CWA Local 1120, the WCSD Board of Education approved their first contract, and the 26 nurses voted unanimously to ratify!

Although the negotiations were tough at times, the workers stayed strong to win the contract they knew they deserved that includes immediate wage increases - as high as 40 to 50 percent for some workers depending on seniority - raising their salaries to a living wage.

The workers had strong support from Local 1120 and the community.

“Students, labor leaders, district parents, and nurse unit members spoke at numerous board meetings,” Pinto said, whose own son joined the chorus of students testifying to fight for a fair contract for his school's nurses. “Nurses spoke about the low wages and the effects of their lives and the district heard them.”

Local 1091 members Fight for Safe Staffing and a Fair Contract

Healthcare workers at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, members of New Jersey Nurses Union (CWA Local 1091), held an informational picket last week demanding a new contract that addresses major hurdles the workers face. One of their main concerns is the lack of adequate staffing, which affects the workers and the care patients receive. In addition to safe staffing levels, the workers are also fighting for fair wages and an equitable contract for all. Other union members, community allies, and elected officials attended the rally, showed their support for the workers, and called for safe staffing ratios. As they have been doing for the last several months, the workers are continuing to mobilize by wearing pins and buttons and holding solidarity actions to build power and strength for their bargaining committee.

IUE-CWA Members Fight for Fair Treatment

IUE-CWA members at Trane in Trenton, NJ demonstrated outside their workplace on December 9th to protest unequal treatment after the company recently announced that only non-union workers would be getting a holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January.
